2021 Ox Power Leadership

Year of the Ox.

Oxen are the hard workers in the background, intelligent and reliable, but never demanding praise.

Very much like our leaders in FitFam, the start of a new year helps us pause and consider how our community has helped us all through 2020 and what value that brings us to our physical, emotional and mental well-being.

Oxen are one of the honest and earnest animals that are low-key and believe everyone should do what's asked of them, staying within their bounds; our volunteer leaders share responsibilities broadly among themselves, offering their ideas and dedication.

We want to continuously challenge ourselves and you! What would an Ox do? As an animal of strength, FitFam leadership symbolizes this through training, dedication, empowerment and commitment, transforming our hearts, minds, and of course, our body shapes.

Every leader has their own personal definition of leadership. Why should you become a leader? How can we change our perspectives from “I will leave it to others” to “What can I do?” As we reflect on our motives, one way to keep ourselves accountable is to ask how the world would change if others act as we do. Let's be the change that serves the change.

Leaders Across the Globe

Day-to-day acts of community leadership inspire a chorus of recognition.

For me, FitFam provides the vehicle that lets me workout with a great diversity of people all over the world. Solo workouts can suck and quickly become demotivating. Virtual FitFam eliminates the barrier of lock-downs, quarantines and different time zones. I really look forward to seeing the regular crew as well as new faces.

We became leaders because we like to help people and understand some of the struggles they face on their path to becoming and staying fit. Taking on leadership roles has pushed us to view fitness more seriously as well as support others who face fitness related challenges on their own path.

I am so lucky to meet FitFam and fell in love with it. Becoming a volunteer leader is not only about my enthusiasm for training, but also about improving my skills. I am an unsociable person. After becoming a leader, I became cheerful and confident. I led workouts and saw participants’ happy faces, which made me more firm in my steps to follow FitFam!

When I attended a FitFam workout the first time, I was attracted by a group of positive, enthusiastic, and shining participants. FitFam made me know if you contribute more, you gain more self-discipline, more persistence, and you will be better.

The most rewarding thing about being a leader is when new people join for the first time. Complete strangers are brought together by fitness and become good friends. Every person brings something new to the group and makes it stronger.

I never thought I could connect with Yogis worldwide via the little screen. COVID forced us to change, and FitFam made this possible. Practicing yoga is my passion, running a community to empower ourselves with selfcare knowledge is a lifetime mission. Join our Li Community through FitFam!

At FitFam, I take people out of their rooms and exercise, so that they can see their own changes and progress. The happiest time for me is when we encourage each other and thank each other. A “thank you” makes me more motivated. If you want this experience, then join us!

Some people don’t understand why we keep devoting so much time and efforts to nonprofit organization. But once you try to do something out of this pure love for people and your willing to serve them, it will bring your motivation to brand new level. The level you have never experienced before. And you will get hooked on it! Fitfam is love. So if you reached the point, where you feel like you cannot just take without giving back anymore, maybe it’s time to challenge yourself and join the leaders team!

I became to a FitFam leader because FitFam gave me a second chance to enjoy this beautiful life. I am a little different because of FitFam, it always clearing my mind, healing my heart and lifting my spirit.
— Manny, Beijing
Community is why I started co-leading FitFam event, it is always my number 1 driver in everything i do (like founding a volunteer organization and co-founding a wellness education business) as it is the reason I have overcome so many challenges (depression and more from losing family members while living as an expat) and the FitFam is another great example of the power of community always there to bring people’s spirit up, jiayou (加油), join us.

Previously, I’d say I was a person who liked sport but definitely not doing it regularly. After getting to know about FitFam, I realized, wow! It’s way less difficult than expected to schedule sports in your daily life if you plan the time well. FitFam brings me more energy, most importantly, it leads a group of amazing interesting people to me and it makes me see the colorful possibilities of life.

We believe in sharing leadership to fuel development, progress, consistency and mindfulness. So the big question we'd like you to ask yourself is...

How do I become a FitFam Volunteer Leader?

1. Establish credibility and start with "why"

Do you go to your location consistently where fellow participants would recognize you?

Why do you want to become a volunteer leader? (eg give back, develop leadership or coaching skills)

2. Co-lead to start

Identify an existing leader to team up and co-lead a few sessions to start

Take a portion of the workout like the warm-up, cool down or demo movements (pro tip: the key is to get comfortable being viewed and acting as a leader)

Review your plan with co-leader prior

3. Lead your first, second and third workout

Ask an existing leader to schedule your first three workouts (pro tip: ensure the minimum gap between each workout so you can iterate based on improvement opportunities)

For your first session, pick and run

Share your plan with an existing leader for feedback prior to workout

Request an existing leader to attend your first few workouts for support and feedback

4. Decide whether you want to continue

What did you enjoy and not enjoy from leading the first few sessions? (pro tip: some are energized by leading while others prefer to be a participant both of which are perfectly fine)

What is your availability and how much time

Ask your fellow leader group for a recurring time slot to lead or co-lead if you would like to continue!

5. Anticipate your availability and commitment level

Will you be unavailable during a certain time period? Do you anticipate other competing priorities that might demand more time? (pro tip: schedule at least two leaders for each workout helps with accountability, support, and backup if needed)

Give advanced visibility to your fellow leader group to ensure coverage

Anticipate and embrace changing commitment levels (pro tip: nothing lasts forever :)
